Gift Shop Associate

Title:  Gift Shop Associate                             

Reports to:   Gift Shop Manager

Overview of Position: Responsible for all sales activities and sales associate job duties, from greeting customers, answering questions, offering assistance, suggesting items, lending opinions, and providing product information.

Duties/Responsibilities

  1. Process payments by totaling purchases; operating cash registers and financial transactions, processing checks, cash, and store or other credit cards.
  2. Deals with customer refunds courteously and professionally.
  3. Provides excellent customer service for all staff.
  4. Ensures daily goals set by the Manager are met.
  5. Actively promotes retail sales by providing customers with a positive experience.
  6. Operates the POS system daily.
  7. Able to troubleshoot Credit Card Machines if problems arise.
  8. Stays abreast of retail trends to provide a unique shopping experience.
  9. Assists in conducting a physical inventory twice yearly.
  10. Responsible for gift shop security to prevent any opportunities for theft, internal or external.
  11. Assists in maintaining cleanliness and organization of the gift shop.
  12. Assists in displaying merchandise attractively to maximize sales in the shop.
  13. Assists in Responsible for decorating VIC display cases with shop merchandise to promote sales.
  14. Assists with putting up and taking down seasonal decorations in the visitor center.

Supervisory Responsibility:  

None Required

Education and Experience/Key Competencies:

  • Basic understanding of sales principles and customer service practices.
  • Proficient in verbal and written English language.
  • Must be creative to provide eye-catching displays.
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have good customer service and sales skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate with customers, peers, and management.
  • Previous retail experience or similar experience on the sales floor a plus.
  • Physical demands: This position involves constant moving, talking, hearing, reaching, grabbing, and standing for at least two consecutive hours. May occasionally involve stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders.

  • Enthusiastic, friendly, and energetic with a genuine desire to provide outstanding service.
  • Previous retail experience or similar experience on the sales floor a plus
  • High school diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred.
  • Must have retail sales experience.
  • Must have experience working with computer systems/POS systems.
  • Must be able to manage and motivate staff.
  • Must be organized.
  • Must be flexible and be able to adjust to changing conditions, circumstances, and priorities.
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude and cooperate with staff.
  • High school diploma required.  Some college experience is preferred. 

Work Environment

Working conditions are normal for a retail gift shop. Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening hours.  Reasonable accommodations may be limited to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
