Green-Meldrim House - Parlor Presentation

Roger Durham, author, historian, and Retired Director of the U.S. Army Heritage Museum, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, will enlighten attendees on all things Fort McAllister. Immediately before the occupation of Savannah by the United States Army in December 1864, US soldiers with General Sherman's army assaulted and overran the Confederate earthen fortification on the Ogeechee River, which was protecting the city. Durham's scholarly interest in the Civil War and his museum background make him adept at focusing the war's narrative with well-researched and spirited stories. The lecture will provide important background for understanding Savannah's Civil War story.
Durham has authored three books on Fort McAllister and related subjects: Fort McAllister (Images of America), High Seas And Yankee Gunboats: A Blockade-Running Adventure from the Diary of James Dickson (Studies in Maritime History), and Guardian of Savannah: Fort McAllister, Georgia, in the Civil War and Beyond (Studies in Maritime History), 2008. He is currently working on Price of Liberty: The Civil War in Liberty County.
