Taylor Square

Info & Amenities

Taylor Square, formerly known as Calhoun Square, is a beautifully preserved space in Savannah’s Historic District that blends architectural elegance with powerful cultural significance. Laid out in 1851, the square is surrounded by antebellum homes, the Massie Heritage Center, and the Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church. In 2023, it was renamed to honor Susie King Taylor, a trailblazing educator, author, and the first Black nurse to serve in the Civil War.

As the only square in Savannah named for a woman and an African American, Taylor Square stands as a symbol of progress and remembrance. Visitors can enjoy shaded walks beneath moss-draped oaks, explore nearby museums, or reflect on the square’s rich history—including its origins as a burial ground and its role in Savannah’s evolving narrative.
