SCAD Museum of Art
Now - Nov. 18, 2024
- Group Exhibition: NO SIMPLE MATTER - No Simple Matter, a collection from the SCAD Museum of Art Permanent Collection, brings together modern and contemporary pieces that use simple compositions and modest materials to expose their intricate foundations. The artists demonstrate a skilled ability to refrain from overindulgent forms of expression, instead showcasing the elegance in simplicity and provoking fresh understandings and connections with art.

- Anya Molyviatis: SUBMERGE - Anya Molyviatis' solo museum debut features new 3D textiles that explore light and materiality. The exhibition includes her largest weavings yet, exquisite in construction and powerful in impact. In works with a diamond waffle pattern, she uses thread structure and color to convey depth. Molyviatis weaves hand-dyed cotton with mohair wool, threading fibers through a rare vintage loom. The resulting works blend technology and craft, augmenting our perception of weight, density, and sound. The gallery is enveloped in soft gradients of texture and color, offering visitors a setting for contemplation.

- Isabel Toledo: A LOVE LETTER - In memory of Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo, "A Love Letter" is a tribute to her work, curated with her husband Ruben Toledo. An innovative spirit, Isabel's designs focus on comfort and movement, inspired by emotions rather than concepts. For over three decades, the Toledos collaborated, inspiring each other to greater heights. This exhibition features Isabel's iconic designs, alongside Ruben's new works created exclusively for the event, and a short film showcasing Isabel's creative process and their unique relationship.

- Olimpia Zagnoli: MULTIFACETED - Olimpia Zagnoli is a well-known artist and designer renowned for her pop-deco illustrations featured in various publications, literature, and advertisements. She begins her creative process by sketching in her notebook, drawing inspiration from her everyday experiences. In her recent exhibit at the museum, she transformed her two-dimensional designs into impressive sculptures, showcasing a series of vibrant scenes along the museum's exterior. Through her work, she highlights the influence of imagery and honors the evolution of our identities.

- Emancipation: The Unfinished Project of Liberation - One hundred and sixty years have passed since President Abraham Lincoln issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862. With the nation in the grips of a bloody Civil War, he declared that enslaved people in the rebelling Southern states would be freed as of January 1, 1863. Three months later, sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward (1830-1910) began working on his statuette, The Freedman, a response to the promise and limitations of the Emancipation Proclamation.

- Telfair Museums Friends of African American Arts Small Works Exhibition - Telfair Friends of African American Arts members currently have the opportunity to showcase their artwork in the annual FAAA Members’ Small Works Exhibition, hosted in the Morrison Community Gallery at the Jepson Center. This year's FAAA exhibition, titled "Freedom: An Artistic Proclamation," will coincide with the museum's Emancipation exhibition. Important dates to keep in mind are July 21 at 12pm, the deadline for submissions, and September 19, when the FAAA exhibition will open at the Jepson Center. Please note that to participate in the exhibition, you must be a member of both Telfair Museums and FAAA.

- #art912 Of One Mind - Of One Mind is a collaboration between local artists Autumn Gary and Alexis Javier around the theme of “oneness,” an approach outlined in the Ohèn:ton Karihwatéhkwen, or the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address. In this invocation, participants express gratitude for life-sustaining forces and elements, effectively recognizing humans’ inseparable bond to the natural and spiritual worlds. Each verse concludes with the following refrain: “Now our minds are one.”

- The Language of Fabrics: Textile Traditions Across Africa - This display delves into the creation, utilization, and cultural and historical significance of the featured textiles. While its main emphasis is on the past, customs, and societal background of African fabrics, it is crucial to recognize that numerous of these patterns have gained widespread popularity among the African Diaspora and have had a significant impact on the fashion world worldwide.
ARTS Southeast
Now - Oct. 12, 2024
- Sav.exe - is an exhibition that explores the intersection of art and technology. It features new media installations by Savannah artists who challenge traditional boundaries. The exhibition asks: What does it mean to work at this intersection today?
The Ellis Gallery of ARTS Southeast will showcase:
- Twitch-activated claw machine by Sam Scheper
- Sculptural interactive hug machine by Lee Cody
- Meditative video landscapes by Wioleta Kaminska
- Immersive sound installation by Joshua Alexander
At Gallery 2424, Abigail Portner and Greg Finger created a fully immersive projection installation. These works highlight the creativity and experimental spirit of Southeast artists.
sav.exe will be exhibited at ARTS Southeast (2301 Bull St) and Gallery 2424 (2424 Drayton St) from September 6 to October 12, 2024.

Brydie O'Connor in the ON::View Residency - Brydie O'Connor, a Kansas-born, New York-based filmmaker and archivist, focuses on women-driven and queer stories. Her award-winning work has support from several organizations and has been screened at notable places. Brydie was recently selected for the Hulu/Kartemquin Accelerator with her debut feature documentary. She's developing two new projects and is working on her debut feature documentary on pioneering lesbian experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer.
Brydie's Residency will focus on her work on THE ROAMING CENTER FOR MEMORY, a project featuring digitized archival elements that showcase queer life in the South and Midwest. She'll present video vignettes blending archival videos with contemporary oral histories. Workshops on digitizing and creating archival collections will also be hosted.

William Franco & Miki Seifert in the ON::View Residency - William Franco and Miki Seifert co-founded With Lime, an artist collective exploring cultural and technological interfaces. They use art to create personal and societal change. Their work crosses borders in visual, media, dance, and theatre arts.
Franco and Seifert's project, Azucar/Sugar, explores the link between sugar globalization and colonization. Their Zapotec and Mixtec culture inspired them. They want to learn about Savannah's refining history and Georgia's role in the Americas' sugar industry. Their Residency project aligns with Dia de Muertos. They'll make an ofrenda with sugar skulls in the studio.
