Savannah's Sports Entertainment
By Brittany Howard
We're sure by now that most visitors know us for our beauty, hospitality, entertainment, history and charm. But did you know that we're also athletes? Ok, well, not all of us per se, but several highly coordinated and talented individuals in our city contribute to some of the most exciting sporting events throughout the year.
In Savannah, we enjoy having a good time and what better way than to root for the home team, catch a puck, run like the wind or make the winning goal?
The Savannah Sports Council is home to our annual runs and hockey competition. Each December, runners gather to make their way across the Talmadge Memorial Bridge during the Enmarket Savannah Bridge Run. Bib pickup, gear and more are available during the Health & Wellness Expo. Compete in the costume competition by coming dressed in your finest (funniest) costumes to conquer what is deemed "The South's Toughest Bridge Run." Run with the family, friends or co-workers as you take on the 5K, 10K, 15K "double pump" and for the kiddos, the Kid's Run, to score bragging rights all year. It's all friendly competition, of course. Say cheers at the after-party for a job well done.
The Enmarket Savannah Hockey Classic is an exciting two-day mashup of four collegiate rivals battling it out on the ice in January. Each team has its eyes on the coveted Thrasher Cup title, making this event one of the most anticipated each new year.
In the spring, when everything is green and the flowers bloom, we've got another scenic run for you. That's right; we're talking to you, ladies! The Publix Savannah Women's Half & 5K is a stunning run through historic downtown Savannah. Our beloved locals and ladies from around the world travel southeast to add a bit of "sparkle" to our city and finish the race in front of the gorgeous Forsyth Park Fountain. Make it a long weekend with the girls by enjoying the pre-race Brooks Fashion Fitness Expo, treat yourself to the VIP after-party race and stretch out those muscles during Yoga in the Square.
It's scary how exciting a Savannah Ghost Pirates game is. See what we did there? Savannah has its very own ice hockey team - hosting games in the beautiful Enmarket Arena. Join Davy, the ghostly mascot pirate, and the rest of the team Tuesdays through Sundays for a "chilling" way to enjoy this fast-paced popular sport. The team also opens the ring for public ice skating sessions throughout the season. Patrons will be free to figure eight and axel jump till the Zamboni shows up.
Quick hands, quick feet and a bit of razzle dazzle are what we like to see on the field. The Savannah Clovers Football Club is a community-based team where a few of the city's best fútbolers (we're told that's how you say it), coaches and execs come together to play the game they love. This pro team's season begins in the spring, making the start of the warmer months in the city all the more exciting.
Did that player do a pirouette while on first base? Is the batter on...stilts? A team flash mob on the field! You've just entered Bananaland - please enter at your own entertainment. The Savannah Bananas is one of the most creative ways we've been taken out to the ball game. Is it baseball? Is it a circus? Are they entertaining? YES! These talented pros are excellent at the good ole game and highly gifted entertainers, keeping the crowd on their feet for each inning. The Bananas season begins late winter and ends right before the fall, so you'll have plenty of time to "catch" this thrilling pastime.
Never miss a game by keeping track of Savannah's sports teams' schedules below and all of our other seasonal events here.
