Telfair Museums and Telfair's Friends of African American Arts present the 17th Annual Lawrence Lecture by Dr. Kirsten Pai Buick in conjunction with 'Emancipation: The Unfinished Project of Liberation.' Dr. Buick will lecture in connection to her essay for the Emancipation catalogue entitled A Controlled Burn: Discursive Emancipation, Abolitionism, and the Consolidation of 'Race' in Visual Culture. She is currently chair of the Department of Africana Studies at the University of New Mexico and a scholar focusing on the visual and material culture of the British diaspora, African American Art, and Pro-and Anti-Abolitionist Images in the Atlantic World. Dr. Buick is author of Child of the Fire: Mary Edmonia Lewis and the Problem of Art History's Black and Indian Subject (Duke University Press), and her second book, In Authenticity: 'Kara Walker' and the Eidetics of Racism, is currently in progress. Among her many distinctions are the High Museum of Art's David C. Driskell Prize for American Art (2015) and the College Art Association's Distinguished Scholar award (2022).
