The Georgia Sons of the American Revolution will host a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at Johnson Square on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, recreating the historic moment when it was first read here in 1776.
This free event begins at 5:30 p.m., with guests encouraged to arrive early. The ceremony will feature a patriotic musical performance by a Fort Stewart band, a flag presentation by the SAR Color Guard and a community reading of the Declaration, with participants each reading a short section.
Living history elements will bring the past to life, including portrayals of key historical figures such as George Washington, along with appearances representing Georgia's signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Part of a nationwide initiative taking place in all 50 states, this event commemorates the first public reading of the Declaration in front of Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
