Savannah's Haitian Monument in Franklin Square
Tucked within Franklin Square, Savannah’s Haitian Monument honors the Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue, one of the largest units of men of African descent to fight in the American Revolutionary War. Recruited from present-day Haiti—then the French colony of Saint-Domingue—these soldiers played a vital role in the Siege of Savannah in 1779, supporting the fight for American independence.
Among them was a young drummer boy named Henri Christophe, who would later become Haiti’s first president and eventually its king. Today, the monument stands as a powerful tribute to their bravery and a reminder of Savannah's deep, global connections, inviting visitors to pause, reflect and learn more about the city's layered history.
