The King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation Announces Board Member Reception and Open House

Celebrating Leadership, Heritage, and Community Engagement in Savannah

Savannah, GA - June 8, 2025 - The King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation invites the public to a reception and open house celebrating the appointment of its new board members and the Foundation's ongoing work preserving Savannah's African American heritage. The event will be held at the Beach Institute African American Cultural Center on Sunday, June 8, 2025, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM.
Guests will have the opportunity to meet incoming board members, tour the historic Beach Institute and King-Tisdell Cottage, and learn about upcoming exhibitions and community programs.
Founded in 1984 by civil rights leader W.W. Law, the Foundation preserves two historic sites:

• The Beach Institute, established in 1867 with a $13,000 donation from Alfred Ely Beach through the Freedmen's Bureau, was Savannah's first official school building dedicated to African American children. Today, it celebrates Gullah-Geechee culture and African American artistry.

• The King-Tisdell Cottage, built in 1896, highlights African American entrepreneurship through rotating exhibitions in a restored Victorian home.

The open house will spotlight current and future programs, including:
• The Art of Richard Law exhibit
• W.W. Law's Gift: A Community Treasure lecture
• Community events like Super Museum Sunday, Kwanzaa, and Seed Swaps

As part of a growing capital campaign, the Foundation seeks to modernize its facilities and expand cultural programming. Community support is welcomed through sponsorships, partnerships, and volunteerism.
