Girl Scout Experience
As the birthplace of Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low, Savannah's an ideal trip spot for troops—especially since dozens of historical sites around town have created tours for Scouts that culminate with receiving a badge. For the ultimate getaway—and the right blend of education, fun, and togetherness—combine the options below for your troop.
TOUR THE TOWN
Get to know Savannah by experiencing a city tour either by foot on a guided walking tour or onboard a trolley. Be sure to stop at the Massie Heritage Center, which has educational programs appropriate for all grades that give a glimpse into the lives of children living in the early nineteenth century. Ask about its Historic Savannah Hike patch or the local council’s own Discover Daisy’s Savannah badge!
SQUARE LUNCH
Savannah has many restaurants offering boxed lunches for your group to enjoy in one of 22 beautiful and historic squares. Try the boxed lunches from Leopold’s Ice Cream, proudly serving Girl Scouts for the past 100 years.
GET TO KNOW J.G. LOW
The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace has been owned and operated by Girl Scouts of the USA for more than 60 years, and is filled with rich stories, special collections, and opportunities for unique experiences reflecting the arc of Juliette Gordon Low’s life. The Birthplace celebrates Juliette’s belief in the potential of every girl, and the remarkable, global Girl Scout Movement she founded.
SEE THE SYNAGOGUE
When Juliette Gordon Low assembled the first group of scouts in 1912, she asked four of her closest friends to help out as troop leaders. Three of them were members of Reform Temple Congregation Mickve Israel, the third-oldest synagogue in America, and the only remaining one built in the Gothic revival style. Today Mickve Israel’s museum features a Girl Scout display and a collection of unique and historic artifacts.
THE HISTORY AND THE MYSTERY
Located in historic downtown, the Webb Military Museum features military artifacts from the American Civil War to Desert Storm. Original uniforms, headgear and equipment are displayed in a walkthrough setting. The museum honors our servicemen and women from all wars and branches, including the Girl Scouts!
ROLLIN’ ON THE RIVER
Enjoy a leisurely cruise on the Savannah River while indulging in fresh fruits and delicious meat carvings. If dinner is not an option, ask about the Daisy Low Lunch Cruise just for Girl Scout troops!
ARRR YOU HUNGRY?
Since 1753, The Pirates’ House and its characters have been welcoming students with a bounty of delicious food, drink and rousing good times. You may see the ghost of a seafarer: Robert Louis Stevenson’s iconic novel “Treasure Island” mentions this establishment when it was a tavern and pirate hangout.
EVENING GHOST TOUR
Discover why Savannah continues to be called “America’s Most Haunted City”! There are numerous spooky options to choose from, including walking tours in the Historic District and ghostly trolley tours that will provide a spirited evening event for your troop.
A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
Located just east of Savannah on a marsh island, The Oatland Island Wildlife Center features a two-mile Native Animal Nature Trail that winds through maritime forest, salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. More than 40 programs are available to students and troops to study endangered species and organism classification.
SHACK ATTACK
Troops will love The Crab Shack at Chimney Creek, a signature restaurant boasting a live alligator exhibit and exotic bird sanctuary. Girls can share a large seafood platter loaded with shrimp, crab legs, smoked sausage, potatoes, corn on the cob and more.
EARN YOUR BADGE AT THE TYBEE ISLAND MARINE SCIENCE CENTER
From a beach walk to a Coastal Gallery tour, the troops have endless options to earn badges. One of the most popular ways to earn badges is through the two-hour Coastal Georgia Badge Program. Check out the Marine Science Center’s website to learn more.
TAKE A DOLPHIN TOUR
Several companies in the Savannah area offer dolphin and eco-adventure tours. Watch dolphins at play and egrets catching fish right alongside your boat. Tybee Beach Ecology Trips, walking tours of marine life along the coast, are offered year-round by marine biologist Dr. Joe Richardson.
