Unplugged in Savannah

gaston-street-couple-walking.jpg

This topic blends a bit of self-indulgence with self-care. It's all too easy to become swept up in the world around us — work, family, travel, relationships. But how often do we allow ourselves to go off the grid mentally? We're also guilty of it, which is why being unplugged in Savannah is a message meant for all of us.

Just being is one of the hardest gifts we can give ourselves. This list is a gentle reminder for you and for us to pause and take in the moment. We're not just recommending it; we're embracing it too.

01

Ditch the Phone. Grab a Map.

What is this mysterious folded paper, you ask? Once a prized treasure map for your back pocket, it's now overlooked by apps and GPS. Challenge yourself to navigate the city the old-school way. Even if you're a Savannah guru, put your internal compass to the test and prove you know North from South. And, as a bonus, see if you end up where you started.

02

Take an Early Morning Stroll on River Street

Grab a brewed boost at one of Savannah's many caffeine spots and head to River Street before the city wakes. Discover isolation at its finest. The river laps melodically against the dock. The coastal air feels smoother in your lungs. And there's no need to weave through crowds to cross the cobblestones. Walk from Plant Riverside District to Eastern Wharf and savor the beautiful calm of Savannah's waterfront.

03

Get "Lost" Without an Agenda

Put it all away - the map, the phone, the smart watch, everything, and wander the city. There is no itinerary to follow, no appointment to keep. Just you and Savannah, enjoying much-needed me time. This is your time to fall in love with the city all over again, one quiet street at a time.

04

Let the VIC Team Choose Your Day

Are you up for an algorithm-free adventure? Well, let's just say this crew should be on your recommended list. This friendly staff will talk with you like an old friend, eagerly point you towards their favorite spots and spill a few insider secrets.

05

Become an Art Critic

Wander for hours through galleries throughout the city. Take the modern approach at the Jepson Center. Twentieth-century art is well preserved inside the Telfair Academy. Discover the layered story of privilege and perseverance at the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. Experience the power and beauty of African art at the Savannah African Art Museum. The spirit of Gullah Geechee culture permeates the Pin Point Heritage Museum, and the avant-garde is alive and well at the SCAD Museum of Art.

06

Browse a Local Gift Shop

You’ll feel Savannah’s local love the moment you arrive, especially in the city’s charming gift shops, artisan boutiques and immersive experiences. Think of these shopkeepers as your personal shoppers, minus the sales pitch. Be sure to stop by favorites like the Davenport House Museum Gift Shop, Sea Love Candle Bar & Boutique, Capital Bee Company, Saints and Shamrocks, Locally Made Savannah, Savannah Taste Experience Food Tours & Marketplace, The Horseshoe Crab/The Monogram Place, and The Salt Table, to name just a few.

07

Run Through Ellis Square Fountain

Who says an adolescent heart has an expiration date? Head to Ellis Square, kick off your shoes and walk or run through the interactive fountain. If you're out for an evening stroll, you'll love how the colored lights make the water show even more vibrant. It's a playful distraction guaranteed to put your youthful spirit at ease.

Enjoy a Picnic in Forsyth Park

A storybook green space that could rival any romance novel, Forsyth Park is one of the city's most beloved attractions, and for good reason. Massive oak trees, sweeping Spanish moss, 30 acres of open space, a walking and running trail, tennis courts, a basketball court, a fragrant garden and the Collins Quarter at Forsyth restaurant are just some of its highlights. No wonder an outdoor picnic here feels like the ultimate unplugged Savannah experience.

And if we're going to picnic, let's do it right. Pack a large, comfy blanket, sunscreen (because we're in it for the long haul), comfortable clothes, walking shoes, a wicker picnic basket and plenty of treats: wine, charcuterie, sandwiches, hummus, veggie sticks and petite fours. Find your perfect patch of grass, spread out your feast and let the afternoon drift by.

09

Walk the Trail in Daffin Park

It’s true, Forsyth Park is undeniably impressive, but the quiet serenity of Daffin Park is often overlooked. This hidden gem offers a more laid-back escape, where the pace slows and the city noise fades. Walk the shaded trail that loops around the park, taking in the soft rustle of trees, the cheerful calls from Grayson Stadium (hey Bananas!) and the easy rhythm of local life.

Read, Sketch and Journal in a Square

We all have those favorite little spaces where inspiration flows, reading feels effortless and writing feels just right. In Savannah, there’s no shortage of them, especially among our 24 historic squares.

Start with Lafayette Square, where the gentle splash of the fountain and the towering Cathedral of St. John the Baptist set a peaceful scene. Over in Monterey Square, shaded by giant oaks and anchored by the Pulaski Monument, it’s easy to lose track of time with a good book or a blank sketchpad. And of course, there's Chippewa Square—famous for its starring role in Forrest Gump, where the real magic isn't the movie history but the way the city seems to slow down just enough for you to capture it. Bring a notebook, a sketchpad or your favorite worn-in novel. Then pick your square, find your bench and just...be.

11

Beachcomb Tybee Island Beaches

There’s nothing like slowing down and letting the tide lead the way. Tybee Island has five beaches, each with its own vibe. North Beach is breezy and wide, perfect for shell hunting with a lighthouse view. Mid Beach stays a little quieter, tucked between the island's busy ends. South Beach brings the energy near the pier, but still hides peaceful pockets if you wander far enough. Back River Beach feels like Savannah’s secret spot, with calm waters and incredible sunsets. And if you’re really up for adventure, boat over to Little Tybee Island - an uninhabited stretch where driftwood, shells and wide-open skies are your only company.

12

Write a Personalized Postcard

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a few handwritten lines can say even more. Text messages are easy, but a postcard? That’s personal. Jot down a few lines, seal it with a stamp and send a little piece of Savannah to someone you love. It’s the kind of surprise that beats a notification any day and might just end up on someone's fridge or in a family album for years to come.

So, what’s the word? Did this list pass the unplugged test? Wherever you wander, take the time to look up, look around and be fully here. Savannah’s waiting.
