The Ultimate Girl Scout Trip to Savannah
By Brittany Howard
If you’ve ever wondered about Savannah’s beauty, reflect on a movement that began with 17 girls on March 12, 1912, and has since garnered 10 million followers worldwide. Juliette Gordon Low believed that independence begins in our youth. She promoted intellect, diversity, outdoor skills and leadership to transform what was once the Girl Guides of America into the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, right here in Savannah, GA. It was this selfless act of female empowerment that today brings nearly 50,000 young girls each year to the city to trace the timeline of how it all began.
While Juliette may not have known the impact this founding would have today, Savannah has become a place of solace for these amazing young girls and their families. Here, you’ll not only learn about the history that still lives on today, but you’ll also enjoy hands-on experiences, cultivate lifelong bonds, earn a badge or two and most of all, learn about yourself.
Think you’re up for it? Then “be prepared” to chart this coastal adventure, because there is much to see and do.
Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace
Walk in Juliette’s Footsteps
Tour the family home of your fearless leader at the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace.
This 19th-century residence is where Juliette, better known as “Daisy,” was born and raised. During the 40-minute guided tour, you’ll view original furnishings, see her artwork and step into the private garden where she and her dog Scout once played - all while learning how the Girl Scout movement began.
Add a photo package if you want to remember the moment, and don’t skip the Birthplace pins, patches or matching T-shirts for your troop. Many groups take part in a Girl Scouts’ Own ceremony while they’re here, and you can even contribute to the legacy through the Circle of Friends program. Bring SWAPs, come ready to meet other troops and expect a few new friendships along the way.
Next, you’ll visit the Andrew Low House Museum, the former home of Juliette and her husband, where she lived out her days until 1927. It was here that the now First Headquarters Girl Scout Museum was founded by Low in her carriage house, and now stands as a museum for current and future scouts to explore through specialized tours, stroll the original garden and view uniforms and badges.
Troops can also take advantage of the private courtyard, a quiet space often used for bridging ceremonies, award presentations or simply a break between stops. It’s a meaningful way to experience this part of Juliette’s story while creating one of your own.
